Alan Pearlman studied Philosophy, English and Comparative Literature at Priceton, Cambridge and Yale respectively, and Dramatic Art at the University of California Berkley. In the 60s he organised and directed theatre and living arts projects for the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi. He has worked extensively as a freelance director in the USA and Europe and was Co-Artistic Director of the Open Space Theatre in London, where he directed the British premiere of David Mamet's A Life in the Theatre. He teaches Directing, Playwriting and Modern European Theatre at the University of Kent at Canterbury, where he established the nationally acclaimed Directing Programme.
